Working at the intersection of software and biology is a fascinating endeavor. We operate at the tiniest scales, where even the laws of physics feel mysterious, and at the largest scales, shaping public health and global climate. We wrestle with arcane, deeply technical questions, and profoundly human ones. Every solution we deliver supports R&D journeys that straddle the boundary between digital bits and physical atoms, journeys whose destinations are often unknown.

But working at this intersection is also challenging. Some hurdles are familiar across the broader tech ecosystem: the need to balance chasing new developments with relying on proven methods. Others are unique to the nexus of software and biology. We contend with outdated formats and poorly documented tools. We navigate closed ecosystems that dominate life sciences, in contrast to the open APIs and rich documentation our peers in other industries enjoy. We must stay on top of the rapid pace of change in both biotech and tech—two domains evolving at breakneck speed. To succeed, our mental models must stretch from the intricacies of cloud-native infrastructure to the quirks of microbial genetics.

Bio.Dev is my chronicle of this nexus. It’s a space to share what I’ve learned from an incredible community, and to keep learning and building for years to come. I’m especially excited about the impact generative AI will have on the field, and I’m committed to creating software that accelerates our ability to understand—and harness—the most powerful and mysterious phenomenon in the universe: life itself.
